How can an old roller shutter be motorised?

Quick answer

An older roller shutter can often be motorised, provided the curtain, shaft, attachments and guides work correctly. The motor must suit the curtain weight and available box space. Power supply, control method and future maintenance access also need planning.

01

Start with the mechanical condition

Motorisation does not repair a bent curtain, tight guide or worn shaft. The shutter must move and roll evenly. Worn components should be repaired or replaced before fitting a motor.

02

Measure the curtain, shaft and box

Curtain weight, dimensions and material determine the required torque. Shaft diameter and shape, plus space inside the box, determine compatibility. Window width alone is not enough to select a motor.

03

Plan the power supply

A wired solution needs a compliant electrical connection and neat cable route. Radio control reduces wiring to the control point, although the motor normally still needs power. A compatible solar option may suit some renovations, depending on exposure and the system.

04

Choose controls for the real use

Wall switches, radio transmitters, timers and central controls meet different needs. One isolated shutter does not require the same setup as a complete floor.

05

Safety and adjustment

End limits must be set correctly so the curtain does not strain at the top or bottom. Obstacle detection and freeze protection are available on some motors, subject to product and installation compatibility.

06

How a retrofit proceeds

BO Stores checks the mechanism, measures, reviews electrical access, agrees the controls, installs the motor and tests movement. Photos of the box and current control help prepare an initial assessment around Biel/Bienne.

Frequently asked questions

Must the curtain be replaced?

Not automatically. A straight, sound curtain that is compatible with the planned motor can often be retained.

Does radio control avoid all wiring?

It generally avoids a control cable to the switch, but the motor still requires power unless a compatible solar solution is used.

Can several shutters be motorised together?

Yes. The design should define whether each remains independent or uses group control, scheduling or central operation.

How much does a retrofit cost?

Cost depends on motor choice, curtain weight, box access, mechanical repairs and electrical work. Inspection is needed for a useful estimate.
